Your Podcast’s First 5 Decisions: Start with Confidence and Clarity

So, you’re thinking about starting a podcast? Amazing. Whether you’re launching a show to promote your business, share a passion, or build a personal brand, how you start matters. In this episode of Abbey the Podcast Lady, I walk you through the five essential decisions to make before you ever hit “record.”

1. Get Crystal Clear on Your Purpose

Your podcast needs a “why.” Are you educating? Entertaining? Inspiring? Your purpose will influence everything from your tone to your topics. When you’re clear on your mission, your audience will feel it too.

2. Choose a Format That Fits Your Life

Interviews, solo episodes, storytelling, roundtables—the format options are endless. But the right format is the one that suits your strengths and your schedule. You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing. Do what works for you.

3. Set a Realistic Publishing Schedule

Consistency is more important than frequency. Whether it’s weekly, biweekly, or monthly, pick a cadence you can stick to. Life happens—build a buffer and remember, batching is your best friend.

4. Find Your Voice and Vibe

Your podcast should sound like you. Are you polished and professional? Warm and casual? Goofy and unfiltered? The more you lean into your authentic self, the more your audience will trust you.

5. Learn the Tech Basics

Don’t let tech scare you off. A good microphone and recording software go a long way. Learn the basics of podcast hosting and distribution (or hire someone like me to help!). You don’t need to be a tech wizard—just willing to learn or delegate.

Bonus Advice: Stay Flexible

Your podcast doesn’t need to be perfect on day one. You’ll grow, evolve, and refine your show as you go. Give yourself permission to adjust and improve.
